Description
This piece began on a morning when I caught sight of my own belly in the bathroom mirror and, for the first time in years, did not look away. The silver-white lines that ran across my skin had always felt like evidence of failure — proof that I had stretched, softened, surrendered to time. But that morning I saw something else. A topography. A map drawn slowly over decades, charting the journeys of a body that had carried two children, weathered grief, known pleasure, survived illness.
The Map of Her Belly is layered with gold leaf, watercolor, and hand-stitched silk thread. Each line is traced and honored. Each so-called “imperfection” rendered in materials traditionally reserved for the sacred — gold, silk, light.
It is my offering to every woman who has been taught that her body is a problem to be solved. It is mine, and it is hers, and it is the body of the earth itself: marked by living, and beautiful for the same reason.
Treasure of my body. Treasure of all our bodies.
